The findings by Allison (1954) of an association between sickle cell haemoglobin and malarial resistance, and by Aird, Bentall and Roberts (1953) of association between the ABO blood groups and gastric carcinoma were a stimulus to those hoping to utilise blood groups to aid selection in domestic animals.
