Abstract
Decisions on which animals to use in breeding programmes must be
based on clear, well-defined criteria if genetic improvements are to
be made with maximum efficiency. B o t h the objectives of a breeding
program and the criteria to maximize progress in the objectives must
be determined. This paper will deal primarily with selection
criteria, assuming that the objectives have been set. The purposes of
the paper are then to:
1. describe the basis that might be used to make choices, and
2. describe the criteria that are possible for single and multiple trait and single and multiple stage selection.
