Friesian cattle, with 3.4 million heads, represent aboug 40% of the whole Italian cattle population and are the most relevant dairy breed in the country. Over 75% of all the officially milk recorded dairy cows in 1980 were Friesian, with 83,974 first lactations and 234, 558 records of older cows.
