Abstract
The economic efficiency of dairy c a ttle is measured accordinp to q uantitative c r ite ria among which m ilk y ie ld has a prominent, w ell admitted, rank in selection procedures. However, reference is always made to subjectiv e m orphological ra tin g s when choosing th e an im als. There is a long intern atio n al tra d itio n in th at fie ld . Breeders and people responsable fo r AI seem to find im p lic it indications about milk y ie ld it s e lf in the anatomy o f the an im als, o r secondary t r a it s as b eef y ie ld , m ilkin g a b ilit y or longevity, even when d irec t measures are availab le.
