Crossbreeding of Bos iadious (mainly Holstein-Friesian)and Bos taumis (mainly Gir and Guzera) has been practiced by dairy farmers in the SE REgion of Braz il for some fift y years, thus substituting the original criollo cattle population. Intermediate European:Zebu grades are generally maintained by periodically switching the breed of bull, which results in a wide range of cattle types in the same farm. To obtain information about the su itability of alternative breeding strategies, a tria l was set up to measure the performance of six Holstein— Friesian:Guzera grades in commercial cooperator farms. The background and ra tionale of this tria l have been previously described (Madalena, 1981). In this paper, preliminary results on firs t lactation traits are presented.
