Abstract
It has been recognised for many years that food conversion efficiency is a major determinant of profitability in intensive livestock production. Notwithstanding this, there has been little direct selection for feed efficiency practised b y commercial breeders and genetic inprovement in this trait has been obtained in most species as a correlated response to selection for increased liveweight gain
