Abstract
Uniform guidelines for objective evaluation and recording of swine performance have been outlined by the National Swine Improvement Federation. Number of piglets born alive, 21-day litter weight, backfat, and age to 230 pounds (104 kg) have been selected as traits indicating overall animal fitness and combined into indexes for selecting herd replacements.
