Abstract

In the sprawling region of Asia and Oceania, there is considerable awareness about the reasons, need, and steps that need to be taken in the -direction of conservation and management of animal genetic variation existing in various forms/ types of native genetic resources. Also -there is a realisation that the principles of conservation of such genetic diversity and their application would vary with species and type of husbandry under practice. Wide gaps remain between perception and practice from country to country and one region to another. The task is huge, and of multiple dimensions, while the resources for undertaking the same are meagre. The net result is that animal genetic diversity still continues to get a severe beating. This presentation contains discussion on aspects of actual situation, practice, and problems being faced in animal genetic conservation work in Asia and Oceania, reveals conflicts between conservation, and development and progress, and also throws light on what more needs to be done in this regard.
