Reviews of gene compilations and rules of terminology for karyotypes and various categories of gene loci of cattle (coat colour, other visible traits, polymorphisms and cellular hybridizatIon/DNA probes) have been checked. Around 350 loci have been isolated, but the existing nomenclatures show some disparity. Tasks of a future committee for standardising cattle genetic nomenclature have been identified
