Abstract

Genetic (co)variances for body weight (BW), clean fleece weight (CFW) and mean fiber diameter (MFD) at 12 to 14 months of age were estimated using ASREML procedures in the South African Dohne Merino population. The data, after editing, comprised of 107389 records, the progeny of 1530 sires and 45178 dams, collected between 1992 and 2004. The lack of convergence in the preliminary three-trait analysis only allowed the fitting of a model including direct additive and sire-flock-year-season as random effects. Direct heritability (h2) was estimated at 0.28, 0.22 and 0.45 for BW, CFW and MFD respectively.
