Abstract

The initial genome scan analysis from Iowa State University's Berkshire * Yorkshire pig resource family revealed two significant QTL for light reflectance traits at the same position on SSC4. A newly annotated gene, solute carrier family 44, member 3 (SLC44A3), was selected as a candidate to investigate its effects on both QTL. An intronic SNP allowed us to map the gene directly under the QTL peak with an improved F value when compared with the original report. Association analysis in the F2 animals provided further evidence for significant effects of SLC44A3 on meat color, pH and drip loss, which warrants further functional analysis.
