A project was carried out to study the responses to selection for cashmere weight and body weight in Nei Mongol Cashmere Goat. From 1997 to 2004, the directed responses to selection were 154.4-174.2 g for hogget cashmere weight and 10.89-12.81 kg for hogget body weight respectively. The corresponding annual rates of response were 26.8 g/year for cashmere weight and 1.01 kg/year for body weight respectively. It would be profitable for the cashmere goat industry with improvement in profit about one US dollar per goat * year when goats are selected on a multiple-trait index incorporating all information available on the goats and their relatives.
